Me? A blogger?

July 26, 2005 / 11:30 a.m.

Metzie’s gonna be in shock. I’ve actually done it.

It was about six weeks ago that Beavers’ media relations director Chris Metz suggested that I start a blog – he even came up with the name, “Beaver Tales.” And you may remember that I actually threatened to start it nearly a month ago -- in one of my Beaver Preview e-mails in late June, I said the blog would be starting in “a couple of days.” Okay, so I’m a little late. (Metz stopped asking, so I think he gave up.)

Just a couple of months ago, I didn’t even know the meaning of “blog.” Oh sure, I’d heard the term -- repeatedly -- but I still didn’t know what it meant. For those of you who are behind the times, as I was, “blog” is short for “weblog.” Essentially, it’s an online diary, a log of whatever one wants to write for public consumption. You can be Jack Handy or Jack London, it’s up to you. Or, in this case, me.

As I write my initial communiqué, I’m on the team flight from Fresno to Portland. This is actually a pretty easy one -- a 9:00 shuttle to the airport, and an 11 a.m. flight. It’s usually much more sleep-depriving.

In fact, I contend that the PCL has the most difficult travel of any sports league in the world. We’re nearly as spread out as the major leagues -- the “Pacific Coast” League extends all the way to Nashville, 500 miles from the East Coast -- but we have fewer off-days (about one per month, plus the three-day All-Star break in July), and we fly coach. In the big leagues, teams board plush charter flights immediately after the final game of a series, and they’re off to the next city. In Triple-A we often have wake-up calls at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. (after a game ended at 11:00 the night before) to catch a 7:00 a.m. flight… and then after spending much of the day in airports and airplanes, it’s often straight to the park for that night’s game.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I actually enjoy the challenge. I just thought you’d like to know.

Okay, I’m now officially a blogger. Entry number one is done. Whaddaya think?
